A 19-year-old pedestrian was injured when a flying tire detached from a vehicle and struck him, according to surveillance footage and local authorities.

The incident occurred Oct. 29 in Chile’s capital, Santiago.

The tire came loose from a vehicle traveling through an underpass, collided with another car, and was propelled at high speed before hitting the teenager, Providencia Mayor Jaime Bellolio said.

“Yesterday an accident happened that sounds unbelievable. A vehicle driving on the street Los Leones lost a wheel and had to stop at the underpass. That wheel was propelled at an enormous speed, another car bumped into that wheel and it finally impacted a young man, age 19, that was walking on the pavement,” Bellolio said.

Bellolio said the 19-year-old was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He is listed in stable condition, Bellolio said, and has multiple concussions.

The mayor confirmed that the vehicle involved had been identified and stopped at the underpass.

“We will give all the information needed so the young man can take the legal actions he considers necessary. We are also looking into his health and recovery,” Bellolio said.
