A truck driver has been rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after a major crash closed the M1 north of Sydney.

The driver was “severely injured and trapped” in a truck after the accident on the motorway at Calga.

Fire and Rescue NSW said all emergency services, including a helicopter, are at the scene.

Superintendent Adam Newberry of Fire and Rescue NSW said the crash happened just before 10am.

A car driver suffered minor injuries.

He said he was unable to confirm reports of an explosion and fire.

The Transport Management Centre said all northbound lanes of the M1 are closed at Mooney Mooney.

One southbound lane is also closed.

Motorists can consider using Peats Ridge Road to Somersby or the Old Pacific Highway to Kariong instead.
