The Commission has launched a call for evidence to collect feedback on the ecodesign requirements for electric motors and variable speed drives.
Electric motors are integral components of various applications across industries, buildings and household appliances such as compressors, fans, ventilation systems, heat pumps, refrigerators, dishwashers and ovens.
Variable speed drives, in particular, help control motor speed and output, optimising energy use when operating under variable loads or speeds. They are typically used in compressors, fans and pumps.
This exercise marks the first step in reviewing the existing rules to take account of technological improvements since they were previously set in 2019. In line with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), the exercise will also look at whether the scope of the rules can be extended to include areas such as material efficiency and aspects related to the circular economy.
Aimed at manufacturers, stakeholders and private individuals, the call will run until 22 September 2025. The replies will feed into the Commission’s analysis, with the next step in the process being the preparation of an impact assessment. The aim is for the new rules to be adopted in 2029.
