Liverpool have defeated Newcastle United in the most dramatic of fashions, with 16-year old Rio Ngumoha scoring a 100th minute winner to spare the champions’ blushes at St James’ Park.

Newcastle were the better side throughout the game, even after Anthony Gordon received a straight red card just before the interval. Despite this, Liverpool would manage to open up a 2-0 lead via goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike.

It was assumed that Arne Slot’s side would cruise home from that point. However, the reality was far different.

Newcastle would grab one back after a header from Bruno Guimaraes, before grabbing an unlikely equaliser through William Osula.

Despite being down down to ten men, the home side looked the more likely to go and grab a third goal at that point.

There was more drama still to come. Just a few minutes after coming off the bench for his Premier League debut, 16-year old Rio Ngumoha would go on to score a dramatic winner.

Arne Slot Called Out Carragher’s Pre-Match Comments After Ngumoha Winner

This was a remarkable moment for Rio Ngumoha, became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer with that late winner.

The youngster had impressed with his performances in pre-season, but it would have been unfair to expect him to make a similar impact in the Premier League. However, his cameo in this game could end up having a big impact on the club moving forward.

Speaking to Arne Slot on Sky Sports before the game, Jamie Carragher suggested that Liverpool did not quite have the same options on the bench this season after some big name departures over the summer.

When the Dutchman appeared on the broadcaster after the game, he was quick to remind the pundit about his comments.

Slot: I did feel that because it was 2-2, I needed to bring two players on (Harvey Elliott and Rio Ngumoha) that could do something special in the moment. It’s always nice that he scores a goal.

I do remember Jamie before the game (what you said).

Carragher: I’m delighted to be proven wrong boss, I can assure you!

Slot: But you were right, last season (against Newcastle) I could bring on Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, and Dominik Szoboszlai. But the end result is not the same, because last season we were 3-2 up and they scored for 3-3.

Liverpool will still look to add another forward before the end of the transfer window, with their pursuit of Alexander Isak ongoing.

In saying that, Rio Ngumoha’s impact this evening could well end up giving Arne Slot something to think about when it comes to considering his options over the coming weeks.

The young man certainly could not have gotten off to a better start in his Liverpool career.
