Two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a stabbing on a TTC streetcar near Toronto’s Little Italy Monday morning.
Emergency crews were called to the College Street and Bathurst Street area just before 8:30 a.m., Toronto police said in a social media post.
In a release Monday afternoon, police said a man got into an argument with a woman on the streetcar and attempted to pull her off the vehicle.
The man and the woman knew each other, police said.
A second man tried to intervene, but was stabbed by the male suspect, who also stabbed the woman, police said.
Police said the victims, a woman in her thirties and a man in his sixties, were transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A third person was assessed on scene, but did not want to be transported, paramedics said.
Police said the 42-year-old male suspect was located and arrested a short time after the stabbing.
He was charged with two counts of assault, theft under $5,000, uttering threats, two counts of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, attempted murder, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, two counts of breach of probation, and possession of a weapon.
In a statement posted on social media, Toronto Transit Commission CEO Mandeep Lali said the stabbing happened on board the 506 Carlton streetcar.
He said he has reached out to Toronto police to offer support as they investigate the incident.
“While the circumstances leading to this are under investigation, I share everyone’s concerns when something like this happens on TTC property. We extend our thoughts to the victims and anyone who witnessed it,” said Lali.
The 506 Carlton streetcar service was impacted due to the police investigation, but has been resumed as of 11:50 a.m. Monday, the TTC said in a social media post.
