RCMP initially said the child who was killed in the crash was 15 years old, but later issued a correction saying they were in fact 12 years old. This story has been updated accordingly.
Shawnigan Lake RCMP are investigating after a child was killed in a crash north of Shawnigan Lake on Monday evening.
Mounties say the 12-year-old victim was rollerblading with their family around 8:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of Hillbank Road when a northbound Honda Civic lost control and struck them, and then a telephone pole.
The two occupants of the car, the driver and passenger, are both 17 years old and suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were both taken to hospital for further treatment.
“While we do not suspect that alcohol was involved, it has been determined that speed played an important factor in this tragic incident”, said Cpl. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP in a release Tuesday.
“The investigation remains in its early stages and police continue to gather evidence,” he said.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
Mounties say a collision analyst with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP also attended the scene and is assisting with the investigation.
