President Donald Trump’s Cabinet meeting on Tuesday featured a moment that was over-the-top even by the usual standards of the events.
The meetings are known for having each member of the Cabinet and other high-level officials deliver a report that’s mostly just praise for Trump.
But on Tuesday, Steve Witkoff ― Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East ― laid it on thick.
“Mr. President, working for this government, for you, is the greatest honor of my life,” he said. “I tell it to everybody and I really do feel that way and I thank you.”
He claimed Trump solved “more than seven conflicts” since taking office, and said the president should get the highest level of recognition.
“There’s only one thing I wish for: That that Nobel committee finally gets its act together and realizes that you are the single finest candidate since this Nobel award was ever talked about to receive that reward beyond your success is game-changing out in the world today and I hope everybody one day wakes up and realizes that.”
The room burst into applause.
The Nobel Peace Prize is a sore spot for Trump, who has complained repeatedly about not receiving one during his first term in office.
Trump’s critics put the president and Witkoff on blast over the very notion of Trump getting the Nobel Peace Prize:
