The England midfielder had to fill in on the wing on Wednesday, but she was as creative as ever to help Marc Skinner’s side to a big win

Manchester United eased through their first Women’s Champions League qualifier on Wednesday with an impressive performance and 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven. The Red Devils were without five first-team stars for their season opener, including England international Grace Clinton and marquee summer signing Fridolina Rolfo, but they still possessed more than enough quality to send them through to the next round, with Elisabeth Terland netting a hat-trick while Celin Bizet also got on the scoresheet.

United were on the front foot from the get-go and it took them just seven minutes to break the deadlock, when Lisa Naalsund pressed high to force an error from the PSV defence before setting up Terland, whose finish was ruthless. Further chances would come for Terland, Ella Toone and Julia Zigiotti Olme, who was denied a goal on her debut by the woodwork, before Bizet doubled the lead just past the half-hour mark, latching onto the rebound of Toone’s well-saved effort and thumping it into the back of the net.

There were several talented players in this PSV side for the Red Devils to be wary of, namely all-time top-scorer Renate Jansen and Switzerland starlet Riola Xhemaili, who caught the eye at Euro 2025. However, United put the Dutch outfit under so much pressure that they could never get into their stride and pose any real threat, with two excellent through-balls from a terrific Toone helping Terland to complete her hat-trick, and a perfect afternoon for the team, in the second half.

Marc Skinner’s side will now likely face Hammarby on Saturday, with a place in the third and final round of Champions League qualifying up for grabs. The Swedish side played in the competition’s group stage last season and are currently top of the Damallsvenskan, with the fact that they are in-season also making them a dangerous proposition. If United play like this again, though, they can be confident of making it through to the next stage.
