Calgary police are working to identify two victims whose bodies were recovered from Mahogany Lake after they drowned Wednesday night.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) said in a release it responded to reports of a possible drowning at Mahogany Lake in southeast Calgary at approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
“Witnesses on site saw a 20-year-old male struggle on the surface, go below the surface and not reappear,” the release said.
Surface rescuers utilized underwater cameras and search grids, as well as shallow dives, to identify the area.Â
“The CFD called in the volunteer members of the Southern Alberta Underwater Search Team to perform a complete SCUBA search,” the release reads.Â
“During the search process Calgary Police identified belongings of another 20-year-old male in the beach area and it was determined that two people may have drowned.”Â
Search teams then recovered the two men’s bodies from the lake.
In a statement posted to Facebook on Thursday, the Mahogany Homeowners Association wrote that its members were “deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred yesterday.”
“We hold the families and friends in our hearts as they navigate this loss. Our most sincere condolences are with the families at this incredibly difficult time, and we join our community in mourning,” the post reads.
Medical investigators are working on confirming the identities of the men and on notifying their next of kin, police said.
Police added that they do not believe the men’s deaths are suspicious, and they’re continuing to investigate.Â
