Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce has expressed concern over Garda numbers in the town following recent ‘anti-social and violent behaviour’ in the town.
Chamber President Jimmy Stafford has written to all members reassuring them that they are liaising with Gardai over the matters.
It follows incidents in which youths were seen brandishing knives and another in which a car was forced to drive away as three young men sought to hijack it at Lower Main Street.
Mr Stafford said “Whilst public order is not a core function of our Chamber, I am aware that many of you have expressed concerns regarding the impact of anti-social and violent behaviour on your businesses.
“Over the past number of years, the Chamber has consistently raised the issue of the lack of Garda resourcing in Letterkenny, advocating for increased visibility, foot patrols, and community policing.
“These efforts have included formal meetings, written submissions to the Garda Commissioner and Minister as well as regular dialogue with local Garda leadership and a recent meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, Western Region. Garda resources are also included in our pre-budget submission in terms of Town Centre regeneration.”
He added that he wanted to assure members that the Chamber board are actively pursuing further discussions with Garda representatives to address these issues urgently.
He added “Our goal is to ensure that Letterkenny remains a safe, vibrant, and welcoming town for businesses, residents, employees and visitors.
“In the meantime, as well as continuing to raise your concerns with us in the Chamber we would also strongly encourage you to raise this matter with your elected representatives and to request through them that further pressure be bought on the authorities to have adequate policing resources assigned to Letterkenny.”
Mr Stafford said that on a positive note, the past two weekends saw a number of high-profile events in Letterkenny that drew large crowds and created a fantastic atmosphere.
And he added “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s clear that these events play an important role in making Letterkenny an appealing place to visit and spend time. We want to encourage and support more of these in the future.
“We welcome any feedback or specific concerns you may wish to share, which we can bring forward in our discussions.
“Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our community.”
