Edmonton police say a former junior high school principal has been charged with sexual exploitation.
Police say that an investigation was opened after they got a report from a woman claiming that she had been sexually assaulted by one of her public school teachers on a number of occasions between 2004 and 2008.
The teacher was later hired as a principal at another school within the same school board.
Through their investigation, police took 51-year-old Jon Paul David Cooper into custody and have since charged him with sexual exploitation.
He has since been released with conditions, which include not to attend any public swimming area, school or school yard, playground, youth shelter, or public library, and not to seek or maintain any volunteer or employment position requiring authority over a person under the age of 16.
“Edmonton Public Schools is aware of the charges laid against a staff member. We will continue to co-operate with police as they carry out their investigation,” said Edmonton Public Schools in a statement to CityNews.
“At this time, the Division has no other details to share. This person is no longer assigned to any work in Edmonton Public Schools.”
Police believe there might be additional incidents and are asking anyone with any information to contact investigators at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
