An 18-year-old man has been charged in the stabbing on the Calgary Stampede Midway last month.
Just after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, police responded to reports of a stabbing near the Euroslide on the midway inside the Stampede grounds.
When officers got there, they found a man in medical distress. He was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition but has since been released in stable condition.
A short time later, police responded to two additional incidents involving individuals in medical distress: a youth near 17 Avenue SW and Macleod Trail SE, and a man near Erlton Street SW and 27 Avenue SW.
Investigators confirmed all three individuals were victims of the same stabbing near the Euroslide.
The two additional victims were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
“It’s our understanding that two groups were known to each other through school and had a small verbal altercation earlier in the day,” says CPS Acting Insp. Scott Campbell. “Once they saw each other again, it transpired into a more serious incident.”
Following an investigation that included witness interviews and reviewing security footage, police identified a suspect.
On Tuesday, officers executed a search warrant at a Calgary home where they seized a folding knife and clothes that were consistent with what the suspect was wearing at the time of the incident.
Irfan Mohammadi has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault. Police say he was not previously known to them.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
