RCMP say they’ve charged a man in connection with a wildfire that began in May.

The Ditch 2 fire was first reported on May 26 and threatened the communities of Molanosa, Ramsey Bay, Timber Bay and Weyakwin, north of Prince Albert.

The fire eventually grew to more than 200,000 hectares, damaging structures and resulting in the evacuation of several communities.

RCMP said in news release that investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency were able to determine the wildfire was human-caused.

RCMP now say 29-year-old Jason Halkett of La Ronge, Sask., has been charged with one count of arson with damage to property.

Halkett was arrested this week in Saskatoon and made his first appearance in provincial court on Thursday.
