Manchester United “do not want to sack” Ruben Amorim, despite the manager’s struggles for form with the Red Devils, according to David Ornstein.

The Portuguese has been under a particularly high amount of pressure after Man United’s stunning exit from the Carabao Cup, losing to League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties having been two goals down in regular time.

Amorim has struggled for consistency since arriving at Old Trafford in November 2024, though many of his troubles last season were forgiven, or at least tolerated, given the team that he inherited. Now, though, despite having a pre-season and a summer of signings that has included the big-money additions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, it appears that Amorim’s problems remain.

In the two Premier League games this season that Man United have played, at the time of writing, they have acquired just one point from six, losing to Arsenal before drawing with Fulham. As such, rumours about Amorim’s future have emerged, though David Ornstein has now provided a major update on the future of the Portuguese.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Ornstein revealed that Manchester United are not currently thinking about sacking Ruben Amorim. When asked about the manager, ahead of Man United’s Premier League clash with Burnley, Ornstein said:

“It’s a high-pressure, emotional situation. The bare facts are that Manchester United do not want to sack Ruben Amorim. They aren’t having those conversations yet, they want him to succeed. It’s early in the season, they’ve made new signings, they’ll want to give it time. I don’t see any world in which, at the moment anyway, he walks away from that job and that contract.

“They’ll hope to win today (against Burnley) and it will calm things down. However, if they lose, they will be in a world of pain. It’s Manchester United and ultimately, this is a results industry. We know how it works.

“If this continues, they’re in a bad spot, but I think it’s got to a point where they’ve made so many managerial changes, they’ll be looking for the real reasons for this (poor form). The amount that’s been invested in him, in his squad, by the executives at Manchester United, they’ll want to continue with him for the time being.”

As Ornstein stated, Man United would not be in a good position should they lose to Burnley. Irrespective of that result, however, it is clear that things have not been as expected under Amorim, though with the money that has been invested in the manager, it is understandable as to why Man United’s ownership will look to persist with Amorim at the helm.

Amorim can only hope for a swift turnaround in form, as though INEOS would like to keep him in charge, it may soon reach a point where the Portuguese’s position is untenable.
