Gardaí have cordoned off a number of areas around Dublin’s O’Connell Street following a serious assault this morning.

A man, aged in his 40s, was seriously injured in the incident which happened on Westmoreland Street at around 6.30am.

He has been brought to St James’s Hospital for treatment.

Six areas on O’Connell Street, O’Connell Bridge and Westmoreland Street have been taped off while gardaí carry out their investigation.

A garda forensic officer has been collecting evidence from the ground below Clery’s clock on O’Connell Street. One door in Clery’s and the entrance into the Decathlon shop next door are behind garda tape.

Further down O’Connell Street, the area in front of the Eddie Rocket’s, Burger King, Hickey’s Pharmacy and Starbucks are also sealed off, as is the footpath on the western side of O’Connell Bridge.

Just south of the bridge the area in front of the Circle K on the corner of Aston Quay is also taped off.

Further down Westmoreland Street, an area in front of the Irish Weavers shop on the corner of Fleet Street is taped off as is the space at the front of the College Green Hotel across Westmoreland Street.
