A Mercer County man was fatally shot while driving, causing him to lose control of his vehicle, crash into a patrol car and strike a pedestrian, officials said.

Andrew Coates, 41, of Trenton, was driving near North Olden and Ohio avenues when he was shot late Friday night. He was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Another man was shot in his right leg during the incident. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

Trenton police received a report of multiple shots fired in the area about 11:25 p.m.

As they responded, one of their patrol vehicles was struck by Coates’ car when he lost control due to his injuries, officials said.

Two Trenton police officers were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

Coates’ vehicle also struck and injured a man at the scene. He was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

A residence on Indiana Avenue and two unoccupied vehicles were struck by gunfire during the shooting. No one in the home was injured.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor’s office said.
