Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of the former Manchester United centre back Victor Lindelof.
The 31-year-old is set for a medical with Unai Emery’s side as they look to strengthen at the back before Monday’s deadline.
The Sweden international has been training with his hometown club, Vasteras SK, after his contract with United expired at the end of the previous campaign.
Lindelof moved to Old Trafford from Benfica in 2017 and made 284 appearances for the club, but the decision was made not to renew his contract at the end of last season. He had been in talks with Fiorentina recently.

There is a possibility that he won’t be the last new signing through the door at Villa Park before Monday’s deadline. Emiliano MartÃnez could depart, with United interested in the Argentina goalkeeper, and there is a chance that Jadon Sancho could head the other way on loan.
A deal to bring Marco Asensio back to Villa is still being considered, and if MartÃnez were to leave the club would look to bring in another goalkeeper. Villa had contacted West Ham United over a potential deal for the attacking midfielder Lucas Paquetá but it is understood that is unlikely to develop due to the figures being quoted.
MartÃnez is not the only goalkeeper United are exploring a move for, as the Belgian Senne Lammens is still a target. It is understood they would not bring in both goalkeepers, but they have been in talks with Antwerp over a potential deal for the 23-year-old.
Elsewhere, the United striker Rasmus Hojlund has completed his medical with Napoli, after an agreement was reached for a season-long loan with an obligation to buy if the Serie A side qualify for the Champions League.
