Flames continue to burn for the 20th day on the North York Moors between Fylingdales and Whitby but firefighters for the fourth day in a row have managed to contain it within a single area.

With the help of local farmers and community volunteers they have completed a series of fire breaks they hope will keep the fire contained until it can be completely extinguished.

Firefighters thanked everyone involved in their construction.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Overnight we received welcome rain. However, active fire fighting continues with localised flare ups, all still within the contained boundary, already reported.”

He warned: “With changes in weather including the increase in rain, smoke will linger at low levels. This means you may notice more smoke within your communities. If you are affected by smoke, please keep your doors and windows shut and continue to follow the advice available on North Yorkshire Council’s website. Please check on vulnerable neighbours.”

The A171, the main road along the coast between Whitby and Scarborough remains closed as does a series of lesser roads in the same area.

“These are there for yours, and our emergency services safety, therefore, please adhere to these and do not drive round them,” the spokesman said about the road closures.
