Twenty-five years ago on Thursday, August 31, just before 5am, Brian Murphy was pronounced dead in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. He was just a couple of kilometres from his home in Clonskeagh. He was less than a couple of kilometres from the Burlington Hotel, where two hours earlier paramedics found him badly beaten, his face cut and bleeding.

He was two weeks short of his 19th birthday. It would be seven years before the various legal proceedings related to his death would conclude. By that time, it was a case better known for where it happened, at the hotel’s Club Anabel, than it was by the victim’s name.
