Alan Browne has joined Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.
He’s yet to feature since Sunderland earned promotion last season and manager Régis Le Bris last week indicated a fresh challenge for the Leesider was looming.
He’s returned to the Championship, where the Corkman played over 300 games for Preston North End and Sunderland.
Based in the area, a move within the North-East would be ideal for Browne.

Meanwhile Sheffield United have completed the deadline day signing of Chiedozie Ogbene.
The Cork native has joined on loan for the season from Ipswich Town. He was given permission to leave the Republic of Ireland camp to complete a medical and sign for United ahead of returning to Ireland duty.
“I’m very happy and excited. It is an honour to be at a great club,” he told the club’s official website.
“I’ve lived here for four years, so I like to think I know what this club means to the people and the city. It is a huge honour to be here.
“I have a feeling about what Sheffield United means to the people, so to be part of it now and to be immersed into this club which has over 130 years of incredible history, and has a passionate fanbase, it is something I want to be part of.
“It is almost like my second home in England and given the stature it was one I had to take. It is an opportunity you don’t pass up on.”
Finally Adam Idah has also completed his deadline day transfer, as he swaps Celtic for Swansea for a fee believed to be in the region of £7million.
“I want the responsibility, and it is one of the main reasons I have come here. I want to have the chance to be the main man, to lead the line and score as many goals as I can,” Idah told the club’s official website.
“Every striker wants that job, and to come here and try push for promotion; if you can be the main man in that then it is an amazing feeling.
“I am really looking forward to trying to do just that and score goals.
“I feel I am a good all-rounder and I can bring a bit of everything. I have the physique, I have pace, I can dribble with the ball or hold it up to bring others into play.
“Overall, I think my game is not just about any one thing, I believe I am good at all the different parts of the game so I hope I can bring that while looking to learn and still add more things moving forward.
“I am really excited, it is a fresh start for me, it’s a fresh start for my family, and I want to get going and get some goals.”
Swansea’s Athlone Town born manager Alan Sheehan said about Idah’s capture on a permanent deal: “Adam’s all-round ability and his experience at the highest level make him a quality addition to our squad, and his signing is an indication of our ambitions for the club moving forward. We are delighted to have secured his services.
“He is an ambitious young player who wants to play a big role in what we are trying to build at Swansea, and his movement and ability to stretch defences will be a real asset to us.”
Last but not least, Franco Umeh has also completed his permanent transfer to Portsmouth from Crystal Palace for a fee believed to be in the region of £600,000, which Cork City will also receieve a percentage.
Pompey boss John Mousinho said: “Franco was one of the outstanding players in Premier League 2 last season.
“He was very highly rated in what is a talented Crystal Palace side and has also been around their first team, training with them and being on the bench.
“He’s one who we’ve been tracking for just over a year now and brings a lot of pace and athleticism to our front line.
“Franco is naturally a right winger, but can play in other positions and we’re bringing him here to impact the side now, while also being an exciting prospect for the future.”
