A woman in her 70s has died after being stung by a swarm of bees in Co Mayo on Monday.

The woman was attending hives in the Ballycastle area of Ballina at around 5.40pm when the bees attacked.

She was stung multiple times and became seriously ill at the scene. Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 airlifted her to Sligo University Hospital, where she later died.

Several other people present at the time were also stung.

A woman in her 40s, who tried to help the victim, was taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that an autopsy examination will determine the next steps in the investigation.

The local coroner has been informed.

It is understood the woman who died was from the Mayo area.
