Three men have been arrested by gardaí following a serious assault in Co Mayo that has left a man in his 20s hospitalised in critical condition.

The incident took place on Tucker Street in Castlebar Co. Mayo in the early hours of Saturday, August 23.

Gardaí originally received report of an unconscious man after an alleged assault outside a licensed premises on Tucker Street.

The injured young man was removed from the scene and taken to Mayo University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries and he remains in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital in north Dublin.

The three arrested men are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at stations in the north-west.

Garda investigations are ongoing, and a large amount of CCTV has been canvassed from the local area.

It is understood the man was previously unknown to the individuals he came in conflict with.

One line of inquiry is he may have had an earlier interaction with one man inside a licensed premises, and this sparked the later more serious incident outside.

It is understood a call to the emergency services was made in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

A source condemned as “unhelpful” and “reckless” widespread misinformation and speculation around the incident.

“It is simply a horrific tragedy, and people spreading the wrong information as fact is causing further trauma,” they said.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

“Any road users or persons with camera footage (including dash-cam) in the Tucker Street area between 2:30am and 3:15am are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
