A Guelph man is facing an attempted murder charge after an 80-year-old woman was found unconscious on a sidewalk in downtown Guelph Sunday.
Emergency services were called to the area of Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street at approximately 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, where the woman was found with life-threatening injuries. She was taken to the hospital.
Guelph police charged a 34-year-old man from Guelph with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Scott Tracey, Guelph police spokesperson, says the suspect allegedly fled from the scene of the attack and was later arrested Sunday night.
“We’re not really releasing any details on how [the incident] is believed to have occurred, but we don’t believe any weapon was used,” he said, confirming that the woman was still in hospital as of Tuesday.
Guelph police believe the two people had “met previously but were not close acquaintances.”
Officers are continuing their investigation into the circumstances around the incident.
Tracey says anyone with information is being asked to come forward.
“If anyone you know was driving through the area and has dashcam video or any other information that they would like to share with the police, we would obviously like to to have that information,” he said.
“Thanks to the good work of our officers, the suspect was identified fairly quickly and arrested and and there’s of course, no ongoing threat to safety.”
