The under-fire Celtic board have been given a vote of no confidence from one of the leading fan groups – while the Green Brigade have warned of ‘escalatory actions’ as the Parkhead fan uproar ramps up.

The Celtic Supporters Association were one of select number of groups who were granted an audience with chief exec Michael Nicholson and members of the board on Friday in the wake of fierce criticism of the club’s handling of the transfer window.

Parkhead bosses responded to the flak with a 1000-word statement late on Saturday night that only fanned the flames of supporter anger.

And now the CSA have cranked up the pressure, along with the long list of supporters groups who penned an open letter to the club demanding more accountability and transparency.

A statement, signed by CSA general secretary Joe O’Rourke, said: “Following on from our meeting on Friday with Michael Nicholson and other representatives of Celtic Football Club, we convened a meeting today of our member branches to give a report on the aforementioned meeting.

“The member branches were dissatisfied with the answers to our questions, and as a consequence have decided to place a vote of no confidence on the Board of Celtic Football Club.”

That statement has since been co-signed by North Curve Celtic, the social media voice for the influential Green Brigade fan group, who have vowed further action against the board if supporter concerns aren’t addressed.

Their statement reads: “On Saturday 6th September, at 8.52pm, Celtic FC released a condescending and unsigned statement which failed to address the concerns raised in an Open Letter which has amassed 378 signatories representing tens of thousands of Celtic fans worldwide.

“Today, Sunday 7th September, the Celtic Supporters Association has issued a vote of ‘no confidence’ in the Celtic board. The CSA has also endorsed the Open Letter.

“Bhoys Celtic, Green Brigade, North Curve Celtic and The Celtic Trust also issue a vote of ‘no confidence’ in the Celtic board. While it is our expectation that the majority of the Open Letter signatories would also endorse this vote, we are unable to add them without consent.

“To that end, we are in process of arranging a consultation meeting of all signatories to the Open Letter to discuss and agree next steps. Arrangements for the meeting will be communicated to all signatories as soon as possible.

“While we firmly believe further escalatory actions are necessary, we are committed to building a fully engaged, inclusive and democratic fan movement which acts on the consensus of the fans within it. We are conscious that there are many individual fans not currently represented and part of the consultation will involve how we navigate this.”
