Most Poles would not be prepared to sign up to defend their country in the event of war, according to a new survey.

Asked whether they would volunteer for military service or “actively support” the army if war broke out, 57% said they would not.

The survey conducted by Pollster for the Super Express newspaper showed that a little over one in four respondents (26%) would sign up or otherwise actively support the war effort. A further 17% declined to answer.

The paper, which described the findings as “astonishing,” speculated that in the event of an armed conflict actually breaking out, people may decide differently.

Super Express also noted that discussion over security and the possibility of war had intensified since Wednesday’s mass incursion into Polish airspace by over a dozen Russian drones, several of which were shot down by miliary jets.

The research was conducted between September 10 and 11 on a representative sample of 1,020 adult Poles.
