Met Éireann has issued two status yellow weather warnings for seven counties, with difficult travelling conditions expected on Sunday night and most of Monday.
The first warning, a status yellow wind warning for Kerry, Clare, Mayo, and Galway, will be in place from 9pm on Sunday until 6am on Monday.
Met Éireann says there will be “strong and gusty westerly winds” bringing impacts that include difficult travelling conditions and the potential for displaced debris and loose objects.
The second warning will impact Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo, with a status yellow rain warning in place from 5am to 5pm on Monday.
The forecaster says there will be “further heavy showers or longer spells of rain” with the rain potentially set to cause difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility, and localised flooding.
More generally, this week will be an unsettled one with strong winds and spells of heavy rain and showers due.
Sunday will see rain clear, with sunny spells and showers developing in the southwest late this morning and extending across the country through the afternoon.
Some of the showers will be heavy and possibly thundery at times in the west and northwest. Along with the wind warning tonight, the rest of the country will see windy conditions along with widespread showers or longer spells of rain, heaviest in the north and west.
Monday will follow suit with widespread showers and fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds.
“Some of the showers will be heavy and thundery, particularly in the north and northwest where spot flooding is possible,” says Met Éireann. “The showers and winds will gradually ease from the southwest from the late afternoon with many areas becoming dry during the evening with just isolated showers.”
Monday night will see some clear and dry spells develop everywhere bar Ulster, while Tuesday will start as a dry and bright day. Cloud will build from the southwest through the morning with outbreaks of rain spreading northeastwards through the day.
Wednesday will also see a good deal of dry weather with spells of rain in the northeast. Brighter spells will develop in the early afternoon with isolated showers.
Rain will develop from the southwest later on Wednesday evening and clear eastwards across the southern half of the country, according to Met Éireann.
Temperatures over the next few days will be in the mid-teens, with highs of 19C on Sunday and 18C on Wednesday.
