A man had to be escorted from St Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny this morning following a disturbance at 8am mass.

The man began talking to parishoners during the mass and walking around the cathedral as mass was being said.

The man, who was in his 30s, then took a number of collection plates and threw them about.

The man was later escorted from the cathedral.

One mass-goer said it was a confusing incident but also quite frightening.

“Nobody really knew what was going on,” they said

“I had seen him earlier during the mass just walking about and staring at the priest.

“But after the collections, he picked up a number of baskets and flung them about.

“He was (saying something) but I could not hear what he was saying.

“It was frightening. It’s just not something you would expect at 8am mass on a Sunday which is always very peaceful and calm,” said the mass-goer.

Donegal Daily has contacted the Raphoe Diocesan office for a comment.

Gardai said they have not received any reports of the incident.
