Kelechi Iheanacho’s 96th-minute spot-kick moved Celtic top of the table
Debutant Kelechi Iheanacho’s added-time penalty gave Celtic a dramatic win at Kilmarnock to go top of the Scottish Premiership.
Iheanacho converted coolly after VAR awarded the spot-kick for a handball against Lewis Mayo.
Earlier, Daizen Maeda had nodded the visitors in front from recent signing Marcelo Saracchi’s cross.
David Watson looked as though he had secured a point for Killie and their fifth league draw of the season with powerful 83rd-minute header.
But referee John Beaton went to the monitor after James Forrest’s shot was deflected out by the arm of Mayo and Maeda’s replacement Iheanacho took the chance to make an instant impact following his move to Celtic as a free agent this month.
The opening to the game was marked by a protest from visiting supporters, with many Celtic fans not taking their seats until the 12th minute.
Celtic lead Hearts on goal difference after five games, with Hibernian and St Mirren both seven points off the top two. Killie, eighth, remain on four points.
What’s next for these teams?
Celtic continue the defence of the Premier Sports Cup next weekend with an away tie against Championship Partick Thistle on Sunday (15:30 BST).
Kilmarnock play their quarter-final tie at home to St Mirren on Friday (19:45).
