The Rangers hierarchy have opted to back embattled manager Russell Martin despite yet more angry protests from Ibrox supporters at the weekend. The under-fire boss watched his team slump to a 2-0 defeat against Hearts on Saturday, prolonging their disastrous opening to the new Premiership campaign with five matches without victory.
This proved the breaking point for thousands of fans at Ibrox, who vocally demanded the former Southampton chief’s departure throughout the entire match. Yet despite overseeing the club’s poorest beginning in 47 years, with Rangers now sitting 10th in the table, Express Sport understands Ibrox supremo Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marthe are backing the 39-year-old.
Martin continues in his role with backing from the club’s new American ownership and will occupy the technical area for next weekend’s Premier Sports Cup quarter-final clash with Hibernian at home.
Nevertheless, this is certain to spark additional fury among the Light Blue fanbase, who have lost faith in Martin. He maintained he would not resign following that disappointing Jambos reverse when questioned by the media.
Yet the club’s own internal fan advisory panel have reinforced the demands they made for Martin’s dismissal following last month’s record-matching 6-0 Champions League play-off thrashing by Club Brugge.
Writing on X, the organisation stated: “Our sentiments expressed previously hold more than ever. This cannot continue any longer.”
