A curious monkey is home safe and sound after an unexpected adventure in Buncrana this afternoon.
Joey the Capuchin was spotted monkeying around the pier at lunchtime today after escaping from the home of Wild Ireland owner Killian McLaughlin.
Joey is not a resident of Wild Ireland, but instead is one of four monkeys that Killian keeps as pets.
Now 25 years old, Joey featured in the Netflix series Return of the Wild: The Bearman of Buncrana, which tells the story of Killian’s passion for animals.
Killian explained that Joey’s escape was the result of a lock not being closed properly.
“Because a monkey’s hands are so dextrous, he was able to open the lock,” Mr McLaughlin said. “His stroll around Buncrana ended as soon as we were alerted that he was there.”

He described Joey as a tame animal, who has been the perfectly behaved pet for 25 years. “He was delighted to be back in his own territory,” Killian added. “He ran straight back in to his family. The lock has been replaced already.”
He also issued thanks to the gardaí and Lough Swilly RNLI for their cooperation in securing Joey.
There is currently no legislation in Ireland that specifically governs the ownership of exotic pets at home. As a solicitor, Killian is well-versed in the licences and permits required for the importation of wild animals to his sanctuary in Burnfoot.
