James Corden has revealed his best marriage advice.
The actor and comedian, 47, celebrated 13 years of marriage with wife Julia Carey, 49, on Monday, Sept. 15. The following day, on Tuesday, Sept. 16, during the opening night of his new Broadway play, ART, at the Music Box Theater in New York City, Corden spoke with PEOPLE about how he celebrated his wedding anniversary amid his busy schedule and shared his advice for making marriage work.
Corden explains that because he had “two shows” the day of his 13th wedding anniversary, he and Carey didn’t formally celebrate it together. “But it was nice to have a cuddle for sure,” he adds.

As for how to keep a relationship strong after so many years, Corden’s advice is simple: “Stick with it.”
“Oh man, you just, just, just stick with it, stick with it,” he tells PEOPLE. “That’s the only advice I can give you. Just, just stay at it. Remember that there was a moment where you were the center of each other’s lives and that moment’s gonna keep coming back around.”
Corden and Carey first met in 2009 after actor Dominic Cooper introduced them.
“I said, ‘Hi, Jules. You might be the most beautiful woman in the world,’ ” Corden recalled of their first interaction to PEOPLE in 2018. “She said, ‘Well, thank you very much. That sounds like something you say a lot.’ And I said, ‘I’ve never said it before in my life.’ That was it. That was it, really. I was in. And by an absolute miracle, so was she.”

The couple spent the night getting to know each other.
“We sat and we very jokingly kind of planned the rest of our lives together, an hour and a half after we met,” he said. “As a joke! We were just talking. And we were both talking about how much we felt like we were now past the notion of going out every night — that we had hit the age where the prospect of a quiet night in was glorious.”
The following year, in December 2010, Corden proposed to Carey. After announcing his engagement news, he shared on X that he felt “very lucky indeed!”
