A major road in Cork Cty closed on Thursday evening as emergency services and gardaí attended the scene of a serious collision.

Albert Street was shut from the old Sextant Bar towards the South Link Road from around 6.25pm. Gardaí diverted traffic from Albert Road onto the South Link Road.

The closure and diversions are expected to remain in place through the evening.

Meanwhile, a man in his 40s died in Ballycotton, Co Cork, after an accident involving a dumper truck.

Gardaí and emergency services arrived at Church Road at 3.30pm after the alarm was raised.

It is understood the man was carrying out works in the area when his dumper truck struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body will be removed to Cork University Hospital for an autopsy examination.

Garda forensic collision investigators will attend the scene, and the L3633 road has been closed with local diversions in place.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified and will carry out a full investigation. The Coroner has also been informed, and an inquest will take place in due course.
