Growing memorial for fallen officers as community pays respects
The community has been honoring three officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department who were killed in the line of duty, with a memorial and a procession marking their sacrifice.
WGAL NEWS EIGHT. AND THERE WAS A PROCESSION TODAY FOR THOSE THREE FALLEN OFFICERS AS THEY MADE THE JOURNEY FROM THE LEHIGH VALLEY. AND NEWS EIGHT’S BILLY MARTIN TALKED WITH SOME FIRST RESPONDERS WHO CAME TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE THREE MEN. HEY THERE BILLY. YEAH, GUYS, THE CONTINUING, GROWING OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT FOR THESE THREE FALLEN OFFICERS. A GREAT EXAMPLE IS HERE AT THE NORTHERN YORK COUNTY REGIONAL POLICE DEPARTMENT. THIS MEMORIAL PEOPLE ARE ADDING FLOWERS AND PICTURES SPENT SEE, COMING HERE TO REMEMBER THEIR MEMORIES WITH THESE FALLEN OFFICERS. WE’RE ALSO CONTINUING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EACH INDIVIDUAL OFFICER. WE’RE LEARNING THAT DETECTIVE SERGEANT CODY BECKER IS A 2008 GRADUATE OF MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY. HE WAS ALSO ON THE WRESTLING TEAM THERE. IN LIGHT OF THESE EVENTS, MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY RELEASED A STATEMENT SENDING THEIR CONDOLENCES, SAYING, QUOTE, WE MOURN THE LOSS OF CODY AND EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS. DETECTIVE SERGEANT BECKER WAS A HERO WHOSE LIFE WAS CUT SHORT BY THIS TRAGEDY. KEEP THOSE WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN FOREVER CHANGED IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. END QUOTE. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER WAS A PROCESSION TAKING DETECTIVE SERGEANT CODY BECKER, DETECTIVE MARK BAKER, AND DETECTIVE ISAIAH HEISER TO LEHIGH VALLEY HOSPITAL, THEN RETURNING HOME ON THEIR WAY BACK IN LANCASTER COUNTY. TODAY, FIRST RESPONDERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS LINED THE OVERPASSES ON ROUTE 30, WAITING FOR THE LIGHTS AND SIRENS TO COME THROUGH AND PAY THEIR RESPECTS. EVEN THOSE WHO DIDN’T KNOW THE OFFICERS PERSONALLY WANT TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT. THE FIRST RESPONDER COMMUNITY IS REALLY ONE BIG FAMILY, AND WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ONE PART OF THE FAMILY, IT AFFECTS THE REST OF US. SO THIS IS A SMALL WAY THAT WE CAN SHOW THAT FAMILY, THAT WE SUPPORT THEM. THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE TODAY. ALLISON NELSON SHARED WITH NEWS 8 THAT HER SON PLAYED FOOTBALL WITH DETECTIVE BAKER’S SON. SHE SENT A MESSAGE TO ME SAYING, QUOTE, HE WAS A VERY KIND AND PASSIONATE MAN. HE WAS NEVER JUDGMENTAL AND HIS FAMILY WAS HIS PRIORITY. HE WAS VERY SELFLESS. WE LOST A GOOD ONE. A SMILE WAS ALWAYS ON HIS FACE WHEN WE WOULD SEE HIM ON THE FIELD. END QUOTE. NOW, THIS GROWING MEMORIAL IS JUST THE START OF THE OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY. I SPOKE WITH TWO MEN HERE EARLIER FROM THE HANOVER COLOR GUARD. THEY BROUGHT A FLAG AND SET IT DOWN. I CAME OVER AND I ASKED THEM, YOU KNOW WHY THEY WERE HERE, WHAT THEY WERE DOING, AND THEY SAID THAT THIS IS A BROTHERHOOD. AND THEY EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN’T KNOW THESE OFFICERS PERSONALLY, THEY FEEL CONNECTED TO THEM. AND I THINK THIS IS JUST THE START OF A CONTINUED OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT THAT WE’RE GOING TO SEE HERE IN YOR
