The Pittsburgh Penguins have their future uncertain, and future Hall of Famer Evgeni Malkin is now the newest name to pop up in trade conversations. For well over a decade, the faces of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey have been Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. Both have won Hart trophies and, in their prime, were the most dominant duo in all of hockey. However, as the pair ages through their late 30s, trade rumors become more and more prevalent. Recently, Jimmy Murphy of RG Media reported that three teams are interested in trading for Evgeni Malkin.

“Montreal, Tampa Bay and Florida have been reported to have shown interest in the recent past.”

Murphy wrote the following in his article for RG Media:

“On Friday night, an NHL executive source told Research Ground that three teams: the Montreal Canadiens (who have already been linked to Crosby), the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Florida Panthers, have all looked into Malkin’s availability at some point since the 2024 offseason.”

Given the recency of these teams checking in on Malkin and Malkin going into the final year of his contract, there has never been a more opportune time for the Penguins GM, Kyle Dubas, to move on from Malkin for a haul of a return.

Last year, the 6’5″ Malkin scored 50 points in 68 games, stellar numbers for any 39-year-old. He also did this playing with a depleted Penguins roster that saw him play with many teammates.

For any of these three teams to land Malkin, they will need to put forth an offer to Dubas that he thinks is worth trading a franchise legend for, and Malkin will need to prove that even in the twilight of his career, he still can be an impactful top-six centerman.
