Five other people were seriously injured in three road accidents in Tipperary, Kilkenny and Cork.

Separately, a man in his 40s died in a motocross tragedy after his motorcycle spun out of control during an event at Cork’s Vernon Mount at lunchtime yesterday.

Emergency personnel ­immediately went to the assistance of the biker.

He was unresponsive and, despite the best efforts of track medical personnel and paramedics, his condition could not be stabilised.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

It is believed he suffered critical head and neck injuries in the incident.

The Office of the State Pathologist and the Cork coroner have been informed.

A full post-mortem examination will be conducted at CUH, with the findings to be supplied to the coroner.

The incident is being treated as a tragic accident.

A motorist in his 20s died in Galway, a pedestrian in his 40s died in Cork and a motorcyclist in his 70s died in Tipperary in three separate road accidents between Friday and yesterday morning.

The biker died in Cahir, Co Tipperary, when the motorcycle he was riding was collided with a van on the N24 shortly after 11am yesterday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

Separately, a pedestrian in his 40s died when he was hit by a car while walking on the M8 Dublin-Cork motorway outside Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

The tragedy occurred at 9.15pm on Saturday at Carrigane outside Mitchelstown between Junctions 11 and 12.

The man was hit by a car and pronounced dead at the scene.

He was originally from Eastern Europe but had been living over recent months in north Cork.

A motorist in his 20s, who was the driver of the car involved, was uninjured but was treated for shock at the scene.

Gardaí are trying to determine the precise circumstances in which the deceased was walking by the motorway.

On Friday, a motorist in his 20s died in Milltown, Co Galway, when the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a van.

A total of 124 people have died on Irish roads so far this year.

They include 47 drivers, 26 pedestrians, 10 passengers, 25 motorcyclists, 13 pedal cyclists, two e-scooter users and one pillion passenger.

Ireland is now just two deaths behind the total (126) number of fatalities for the same period last year. In the summer, road deaths had been over 20pc down on the same period in 2024.
