The police car was ‘responding to an emergency’ at the time of the crash

Two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a crash between a car and a police vehicle on Edge Lane this afternoon. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1.50pm on Wednesday, September 24.

The crash involved a Citroen and a police car, which was responding to an emergency call at the time, according to police. The driver and passenger of the Citroen sustained serious but not life-threatening or life-changing injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The police officers involved were also taken to hospital as a precaution, after sustaining minor injuries caused by the airbag.

Photographs from the scene show one vehicle flipped onto its side, while another has suffered significant damage to its bonnet.

Edge Lane is currently closed in both directions near its junction with Holt Road, with a heavy emergency services presence still at the scene.

Drivers reported heavy congestion in the surrounding areas including Smithdown Road, Durning Road, and Holt Road.

Buses have been diverted as a result of the crash. Arriva North West posted on X: “Due to a police incident on Edge Lane, service 7 will use Innovation Boulevard, Wavertree Road and Irvine Street in both directions until further notice, omitting a section of Edge Lane Delays are highly likely, please allow extra time for your journey.”

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area while the incident is being dealt with.
