An Irish woman has reportedly been strangled to death with a vacuum cord in her Spanish apartment. The woman, who has been named locally by reputable Spanish media outlet ‘The Olive Press’ as Catherine Peckham (66), is reportedly originally from Co Cork.

Reports say Catherine was found strangled to death in her apartment in Benidorm – and that a woman known to her, who she had allegedly invited into her home, called a friend to say she had killed her on the night of September 17.

The woman who called police is a 63-year-old British resident and was arrested on suspicion of murder, after the friend raised the alarm, according to reports.

The shocking incident took place at the woman’s flat in the Rincón de Loix district of Benidorm – which is home to many British and Irish expats.

The suspect has been remanded into custody without bail and has reportedly so far refused to give a statement to police. It is reported that she had moved in with the Irish woman just four days earlier – after being offered a place to stay.

An alleged altercation resulted in the British suspect allegedly phoning a friend to confess what happened and ask for advice. The friend advised the woman to hand herself in and also contacted emergency services.

When police arrived at the apartment, they found Catherine Peckham deceased with the cable still wrapped around her neck. The suspect was arrested at the scene.
