While Sharlene Mawdlsey has become one of the most beloved sportspeople in Ireland over the last few years, the scenes that emerged in the aftermath of Tipperary’s All-Ireland win this summer endeared her even further to the nation.

The Olympian is in a relationship with Tipp hurler Mikey Breen, meaning that she was very much in the middle of their Liam MacCarthy celebrations. That started in Croke Park after the final win over Cork, but it would continue into the days that followed.

That included the surreal scenes of seeing Mawdsley take on former Tipperary player Buggy O’Meara in a race in the early hours of a post All-Ireland party.

She has now opened up on the background that viral clip.

Sharlene Mawdsley Mortified To Wake Up To Footage Of Tipperary Race

Sharlene Mawdsley seemed to very much enjoy the Tipperary All-Ireland celebrations, although this particular incident made her feel a bit sheepish the following day.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, she recalled the ‘fear’ she had after the clip of her exploits started to do the rounds on social media.

Someone must have said, ‘I bet I’d beat you in a race’. And my competitiveness said, ‘No, you won’t’. Next thing I knew, the sandals were off and I was ready to go.

You’ve been drinking for four or five hours and then something like that happens and you’re like, ‘Oh, God’. I woke up the next day and saw my phone and thought, ‘What’s happened?’ And then I saw it. I didn’t leave the apartment for the day. The fear was so bad.

When I went to training the next day, I was making sure my legs were OK because Nationals were only two weeks after.

I was a bit worried, but thankfully, everything paid off. I could have fun and still win a national title!

Thankfully, it did not seem to affect her performance on the track.

If Tipperary can get their hands on another All-Ireland in 2026, you get the sense that Sharlene Mawdsley will not be quite a quick to accept racing challenges off the general public during the ensuing celebrations.
