Two people have been taken to hospital after a gas bottle exploded and set fire to a vehicle in Christchurch.

Fire and Emergency said crews were called to Waterloo Road in Hornby about 9.30am after the work vehicle – which was carrying five gas cylinders – caught fire.

St John responded with two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle.

“Two patients were assessed at the scene, with both transported to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition,” St John said.

Police said workers from about five neighbouring businesses were evacuated.

The road has since reopened.
