A Qantas plane flying passengers from Sydney to Johannesburg, South Africa, was forced to turn back after suffering a technical issue.

QF63 left Sydney Airport about 10am on Tuesday but had to head back about four hours into the flight.

It was just southwest of Tasmania when it turned around, according to flight tracker data.

A fault with satellite communications prompted the decision to turn back.

The Airbus A380, which can carry up to 485 passengers, landed back in Sydney Airport nine hours and 20 minutes after its initial take off.

The flight to Johannesburg takes approximately 14 hours and 30 minutes, with most of the flight time over the Indian ocean, leaving limited diversion options for pilots.

A new flight has been scheduled for 1pm on Wednesday.

Qantas has previously announced its plans to phase out its A380 fleet by 2032, replacing them with more fuel-efficient Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s.
