The grand final isn’t until this weekend, but rugby league’s biggest awards night is already here.
It’s a time when the players can change up their looks with a bit more extravagance than simply pulling on their away jerseys — so we’re expecting some bold outfits this year.
Here are some of the looks we’ve seen at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.
Isabelle Kelly (Sydney Roosters) could be a member of an intergalactic royal court in this metallic number. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Xavier Coates (Melbourne Storm) and Destiny Mino-Sinapati (Gold Coast Titans) looking like they just came off the set of a very expensive perfume ad. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Mahalia Murphy’s (Parramatta Eels) dress is the perfect shade of blue for pretending to be that “Heart of the Ocean” necklace from Titanic — which gives her a free pass to belt out Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On at least once tonight. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
I don’t even need to look at Julia Robinson’s (Brisbane Broncos) stats against St George, because this armour-like dress and those sword-point shoes tell me she knows a thing or two about slaying dragons. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
I’m sure James Tedesco (Sydney Roosters) has his reasons for not wearing an emerald green suit, but it’s a real shame he didn’t because it would have paired beautifully with that pink number of Maria Glinellis and given us the kind of Wicked cosplay we’ve come to expect from red carpet events. Leone and Stephen Crichton proving that a little pop of red can really tie an outfit together. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
With Payne Haas (Brisbane Broncos) bucking the black suit trend and Leilani Mohenoa wearing an artfully melted disco ball, there’s no chance of them blending in tonight. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
There’s something about the drama of this dress and the expression on Jessica Sergis’s (Sydney Roosters) face that makes me think she might just have the power to conjure thunderstorms to thwart her enemies. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Kelsea Peck in a number that could revitalise the criminally overlooked “disco chain mail” fashion movement while Hudson Young (Canberra Raiders) keeps it simple with a classic bow tie. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Chelea Balzan and Tom Starling (Canberra Raiders) are at a footy awards night but, in these outfits, they could also be attending a high-profile gala in one of those Christopher Nolan Batman movies. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Herbie Farnworth (Redcliffe Dolphins) with Lily Pickles, whose patterned dress is giving off a kind of art deco vibe that would make for a great wallpaper print. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Eloise Sohier’s sleeves look like they are wearing little Superman capes and, while that sounds very silly in theory, it’s quite elegant in reality. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Ellie Johnston (Cronulla Sharks) deploying the undeniable glam-boosting power of a silky shrug with Oscar White. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Montana Clifford’s (Wests Tigers) sleeves migth be long, but they’re not there for warmth — they’re there for the drama. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
If the dress Yasmin Clydsdale (Newcastle Knights) is wearing came with its own soundtrack, I’m fairly certain it would be an Enya song blended with the sound of waves crashing on a beach. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Abbi Church (Parramatta Eels) in a dress that is begging to be re-worn to a masked ball with a black feathery mask. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
Payton Takimoana (New Zealand Warriors) asking “what if bandages were fancy?” with this number. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
I wouldn’t have thought that a dress inspired by those flexible metal hoses that you see under the bathroom sink would be all that spectacular, but this number of Jessica Yates proves me very wrong indeed. (Getty Images: Mark Metcalfe)
