Steven Gerrard has been tipped for a return to management less than a year on from his departure from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

His 18-month tenure at Al-Ettifaq came to an end earlier this year in January when the club and the former England and Liverpool captain agreed to part ways by mutual consent.

Gerrard, who took charge in July 2023, has been out of management ever since.

The Liverpool legend however has made it clear that he would not rush into management.

Speaking back in April on the Peter Crouch Podcast, Gerrard admitted that his stint in Saudi Arabia wore him out:

“I will go in at some point but when it’s round the clocks, I’ve doing it 18, 19 months, I want to be free, I want to play a round of golf, go down the boozer and have a couple of beers, do normal things that you can’t do when you’re coaching.” he said.

But it seems now that Gerrard could be making his return

Rangers have confirmed the departure of manager Russell Martin after a run of seven defeats in 17 matches across all competitions, paving the way for speculation over a shock return of club legend Steven Gerrard.

Martin, appointed last summer on a four-year deal, left by mutual consent on Sunday evening following a 2-0 Scottish Premiership defeat at Hearts that left Rangers fourth in the table, eight points adrift of Celtic.

The Ibrox hierarchy has declined to name an immediate successor, but Gerrard’s name is already on the lips of supporters and board members alike.

The Guardian is reporting that the Liverpool legend is under  “strong consideration for a return” to the Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard led Rangers to a historic Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 season, securing the club’s first league championship since 2011.

Under his management, Rangers completed an unbeaten league campaign, amassing 102 points, conceding just 13 goals, and achieving 26 clean sheets—a league record. The achievement ended a decade-long dominance by Celtic and marked Rangers’ 55th Scottish championship.
