A cyclist has been killed when he was struck by a car in Melbourne’s northwest.

The 53-year-old man was hit on the corner of Mickleham Rd and Bateman St in Atwood just before 7pm on Tuesday night.

Police say a Mercedes appears to have veered into a bike lane and hit the cyclist while driving north on Mickleham Rd.

A number of people including an off-duty police officer stopped and helped the man.

The cyclist suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.

The 55-year-old Mercedes driver was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for observation and is assisting police.

Another driver of a second car travelling in the same direction at the time is also speaking with police.

Police remained at the scene into the night inspecting the Mercedes, which had a smashed windscreen and blood on the bonnet.

Detective saregant Luke Miller said he does not believe speed to be a factor in the accident but that the driver’s blood and alcohol levels will be looked at.

“There’s nothing here at this point in time that indicates that they are definetly a factor,” he said.

“We’ll also be looking at other factors such as distraction which may play a part in this collision as well.”

Miller urged motorists to be aware of their surroundings and practise good driving behaviours at all times.

“One slight mishap or lack of concentration can cause a catastrpohic result such as whats happened here today,” he said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any dashcam or CCTV footage that could help police has been urged to come forward.
