ForbesNYT Connections Hints Today: Thursday, October 9 Clues And Answers (#851)By Kris Holt
Hey there, Connectors! The weekend is right around the corner. Let’s make sure you slide into it with your Connections streak intact.
Going into today’s game, my Connections streak sits at 223. That’s my best streak by miles. My previous best was 32. I’m not quite sure how I’ve managed to keep it alive for this long.
I’d love to keep the streak going for a full year. I think that’d be quite neat. However, I am prone to self-sabotage and the frequent victim of a chaos gremlin that lives inside me. I often think it might be funny to intentionally tank my streak.
But competitive (and, I suppose, journalistic) integrity dictates otherwise. And so, I’ll try my best to keep this streak alive for as long as I can.
Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Friday, October 10 are coming right up.
NYT Connections Hints – How To Play
Connections is a free New York Times daily word game that you can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.
Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.
There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved. But this is not a hard and fast rule. Be ready for curveballs – part of the fun of Connections is in how the NYT shakes things up to keep you on your toes.
As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends using an emoji-based grid. The game tracks your progress too.
Many players take pride in having long win streaks or getting a reverse rainbow – correctly guessing the purple, blue, green and yellow groups in that order with no mistakes. That adds an extra little challenge.

This is your last chance to look away.
This is your final warning!
Today’s Connections answers are…
🟨 Yellow group — significant (BIG, IMPORTANT, MAJOR, SERIOUS)🟩 Green group — one in a septet (CONTINENT, DEADLY SIN, SISTER, WONDER)🟦 Blue group — tarot cards, with “the” (DEVIL, LOVERS, MAGICIAN, STAR)🟪 Purple group — _____ eye (EVIL, MAGIC, NAKED, THIRD)
Another fairly straightforward game for me, even if I did get the purples by default.
The greens were first up after I got to DEADLY SIN. CONTINENT and WONDER were obvious inclusions. I vaguely remembered something about Seven SISTERs, so I included those. Guess I’ll learn what those actually are when I start writing Answers Explained!
I figured LOVERS, DEVIL and MAGICIAN were tarot cards (thanks entirely to my deep love of Sayonara Wild Hearts). I didn’t know what would go with them, so I knocked out the pretty obvious yellows to reduce the options. At that point, I just needed to add the remaining non-MAGIC noun.
That left the purples. I wondered for a second if they might have been referring to ’80s movie titles (EVIL Dead and The NAKED Gun) but nope.
That takes my overall streak up to 224 wins. I didn’t tank it! Here’s my grid for today:

P.S. I didn’t know this until recently, but one of my favorite Babymetal songs, “Megitsune,” borrows from a traditional Japanese folk song called “Sakura Sakura.” Of course, I had to check that out. It’s quite beautiful:
I wager some of you will be wondering about “Megitsune” as well, so here you go. It gets pretty intense, so don’t say I didn’t warn you:
