Last year it was heartbreak for Hull KR. This year, history.
The Rovers, who went down 9-2 to Wigan in the 2024 Super League grand final, have exacted revenge and in the process completed the treble.
They hadn’t won a major trophy for 40 years before this season. Now, having already won the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield, they are Super League champions too after a dominant 24-6 win in Sunday’s decider.

It was just the fifth time a team had won the treble in the Super League era, with the Robins joining the Bulls, Rhinos, Saints and Warriors — the only four teams to have ever lifted the Super League trophy before Sunday.
Wigan is the most successful of those four other teams, having won the treble on four occasions. This year, however, they went without a trophy for the first time under Matt Peet.

But that says more about the quality of this Hull KR team under Willie Peters.
Peters, who will now join Kevin Walters as assistant coach of the Kangaroos ahead of the upcoming Ashes tour, had been on the radar of NRL teams before Sunday’s final.
But now? Well, the former South Sydney and St George Illawarra halfback, who has previously served as an assistant coach at the Rabbitohs, Sea Eagles and Knights, will be the name on everyone’s lips.

“Willie Peters has exponentially accelerated where this club is at,” former Warrior and two-time Man of Steel Sam Tomkins said on Sky Sports.
“His obsession with the game, his ruthless attention to detail, his ability to motivate and storytell and get the best out of his team has taken Hull KR from being a very competitive team to being almost untouchable in 2025.
“The quality of his coaching, I can’t emphasise how good he is.”

Of course, a coach is only as good as his players and in the case of Hull KR halfback and 2024 Man of Steel winner Mikey Lewis, they don’t come much better.
Peters challenged his star halfback to “own” the moment in Sunday’s decider, referencing what Broncos fullback Reece Walsh had done the week prior against Melbourne in the NRL.
Lewis did just that, delivering the opening try in a game which Peters later told Sky Sports was “the making” of him.
“Mikey Lewis knew before this game that he had to take those big moments and go after the game a bit more,” Peters said.
“Tonight was the perfect opportunity for him. Tonight is the making of Mikey Lewis, no doubt about it.
“We know he’s a very good player, but he wants to chase greatness. This is the start of that.”
An emotional Lewis, who was crowned man of the match, said it was “very special” to win the treble.
“I just had to do myself proud, my family proud, and my little boy,” Lewis said.
“He’ll be able to look back when he’s older and see his dad’s a treble winner. It will be in the history books forever.”

As for the game itself, a yellow card to Brad O’Neill in the first half proved the turning point, with Lewis and Joe Burgess both scoring with Wigan down a man.
O’Neill was pinged for a dangerous tackle on Tyrone May which sparked an all-in scuffle, with former Roosters enforced Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in the thick of it and potentially fortunate not to be binned himself for retaliating as the two teams came together.
But speaking of Waerea-Hargreaves, the much-maligned Hull KR recruit turned in his best performance of the season and set the tone right from the start with a big hit on Bevan French before also pressuring Liam Marshall to force a knock-on from Liam Marshall before the Rovers’ second try.
Waerea-Hargreaves looked like he was going to be rubbed out of Sunday’s grand final after being handed a three-game ban for a head high tackle earlier in the week, only for Hull KR to successfully challenge the ruling.

They had nothing to lose with Waerea-Hargreaves retiring at the end of the year and it was a fairytale farewell for him, with the 36-year-old running for 94 metres and making 15 tackles in the win.
“JWH, he produced his best performance in a Hull KR shirt tonight,” Tomkins said on Sky Sports.
“When Willie Peters signed him, he signed him for the 11th of October. Not for the 14th of February, not for March, not June, not July. You sign JWH for tonight.”
Peters echoed Tomkins’ sentiments, telling Sky Sports that Waerea-Hargreaves “left his best to last”.
“What an amazing performance,” the Hull KR coach said.
“What Jared brings around the place and what they both (Micky McIlorum) bring around the place, you can’t put a price on that. People said they were too old and as soon as they walked in I knew what we were going to get.”

What Peters got was a committed Waerea-Hargreaves, who brought the energy and aggression early as the Rovers opened up a 10-0 lead after the yellow card period.
Harry Smith scored to reduce the deficit for Wigan after some silky work from Jai Field in the lead-up but just as they had a chance to build momentum, errors started to cruel the Warriors and a Jez Litten try in the 60th minute then pushed the Hull KR lead out to 18-6.
The game still hung in the balance for the next 15 minutes or so before Burgess pounced for the intercept and his second try of the night to seal the win for the Rovers.
captain Elliot Minchella said it was “bonkers” to see the way Hull KR had turned its fortunes around, having been relegated only nine years ago.
“Credit goes to the people at the top of the club who have stuck by it through thick and thin. They could have easily just walked away and said ‘This is someone else’s job’, but they did the complete opposite,” he told BBC.
“I’ve been here for six years and the turnaround in that time has been astronomical, so I’m just so proud.”
Wigan coach Peet, meanwhile, was classy in defeat, declaring: “Sometimes I think these things are written in the stars and this season belongs to them”.
