The International Energy Agency (IEA) is launching its new report Integrating Distributed Energy Resources in China: Lessons from International Experience. The report highlights how distributed solar PV, batteries, electric vehicles and demand response offer new opportunities to enhance China’s power system flexibility and support decarbonisation, while also presenting technical and regulatory challenges for grid companies, policymakers, and market participants. Drawing on global best practices, it outlines policies, market designs and regulatory frameworks tailored to the Chinese context that can facilitate DER integration while ensuring reliability and cost-effectiveness. This work has been informed by a series of international workshops and extensive exchanges with both Chinese and international experts from countries that have already experienced large-scale DER uptake and implemented innovative solutions.
