Critical Role‘s animated fantasy series “The Legend of Vox Machina” has been renewed for a fifth and final season, the group announced at San Diego Comic Con. The upcoming Season 4 will also premiere on Prime Video in 2026. But Dungeons and Dragons fans will have Critical Role’s new series, “The Mighty Nein,” to hold them over while they wait; it will premiere on Nov. 19.
Both series star Critical Role founders and cast members Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham. In “The Legend of Vox Machina,” they bring their fan-favorite Dungeons & Dragons characters to life from their first Critical Role campaign. Bailey plays half-elf ranger Vex, O’Brien is her twin brother Vax, Willingham is the lovable barbarian Grog, Johnson is the holy gnome cleric Pike, Jaffe is the royal gunslinger Percy, Ray is magical half-elf druid Keyleth and Riegel is the raunchy gnome bard Scanlan. Dungeon master Mercer plays a host of other characters in the series.
Season 3 ended with the group defeating the evil dragons of the Chroma Conclave once and for all, then seemingly splitting up and going their own ways. However, the final scene teased the appearance of Critical Role’s ultimate undead villain, Vecna. Season 4 “finds our heroes scattered across the globe on separate journeys, but when a cataclysmic threat befalls Exandria — they must reunite to face a foe darker than they could imagine.”
“It’s so rare for any television series to get to tell a complete story, beginning to end, exactly as it was envisioned,” said Riegel and Willingham. “We’re so grateful to our fans, the critters, our partners at Prime Video, and the original Kickstarter backers for bringing this show to life, and turning the numbskulls of Vox Machina into animation legends.”
In “The Mighty Nein,” the Critical Role stars all play different characters who reluctantly join together for a common mission. The campaign is set in the same world as “Vox Machina,” but in a separate continent. In the spinoff, Bailey plays Jester Lavorre, Willingham is Fjord Stone, Riegel is Nott the Brave, Ray is Beauregard Lionett, Jaffe is Mollymauk Tealeaf and Johnson is Yasha Nydoorin. Guest stars in Season 1 include Mark Strong, Alan Cumming, Tim McGraw, Anika Noni Rose, Ming-Na Wen, Auli’i Cravalho, Rahul Kohli , Robbie Daymond and Jonathan Frakes.
“‘The Mighty Nein’ follows a group of fugitives and outcasts, bound by secrets and scars,” the logline reads. “But when a powerful arcane relic known as ‘The Beacon’ falls into dangerous hands, they must learn to work together to save the realm and stop reality itself from unraveling.”
