Lucas Raymond suffered an upper body injury in the second period and the Detroit Red Wings still found a way to pull out a dramatic 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Raymond went to the dressing room after being driven right shoulder-first into the boards by Toronto defenseman Chris Tanev. Raymond didn’t return, finishing the game with 7:58 minutes played.

“I can’t tell you much,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “Obviously, he didn’t return. We will have to get him home and evaluate him. We will know more (Tuesday).”

This was not an aggravation of a previous injury. “He was fine coming in,” McLellan said. “It was in tonight’s game. It looked pretty innocent, actually. We will have to see what comes out of it.”

With Raymond out, McLellan adjusted his line by moving Mason Appleton, a summer free agent signee, to play with Dylan Larkin and Emmitt Finnie. Appleton was brought in to be a checker, but he ended up netting the game-winning goal with 45 seconds left in regulation.

Raymond’s absence seemed to impact the cohesiveness of the power play most of all. The Red Wings were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

“You could see our power play was a little out of whack — the timing,” McLellan said. “The sense of comfort that comes from having him there was thrown off.”
