Danny Rohl is now out of the running to succeed Russell Martin

Out of work Danny Rohl has told Rangers he is no longer interested in becoming the next manager at Ibrox.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss had emerged as the favourite to replace Russell Martin after impressing US owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paarag Marathe during talks in London last weekend.

That followed Steven Gerrard’s decision to pull out of the running for the job due to the “timing” of a return to Glasgow for the title-winning Rangers boss despite days of talks.

But Record Sport understand that the board had been split on Rohl – despite the boss taking steps to put a backroom team in place should he land the job

Record Sport revealed that the Shanghai Port boss Kevin Muscat appears to be on the verge of winning the race to replace Martin in the hot seat.

It is understood that German boss has now told the Scottish Premiership giants he does not wish to continue in the race to become their new head coach.

It is claimed that the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig boss felt that the timing is not right to continue in the recruitment process.

The 36-year-old has reluctantly informed Rangers that he no longer wants to be consider for the job.

It leaves Muscat as the clear frontrunner for the hot seat – with Neil McCann in the frame to step into the dugout on an interim basis until Muscat arrives from China.

The former Light Blues’ midfielder is currently locked in a battle for the Chinese Super League crown as he looks to secure back-to-back titles – with the season coming to an end on November 22.
