Amazon has scrapped plants for a new €300m industrial plant in Dublin as it could not secure an electricity supply.

According to a report in The Irish Times, the decision to scrap the plant means more than 500 jobs will now not be created at the proposed facility.

The plant was set to be built in Ballycoolin in northwest Dublin, where Amazon already has a significant presence.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company’s cloud computing service, planned to use to new site for the manufacturing of server racks, a form of storage used in data centres for housing servers and other devices.

Planning permission for a 23,600 square metre site was granted by Fingal County Council in 2022 and the project had the support of the State.

The project was brought to a halt by Amazon when it was told by ESB Networks that power could not be supplied within its proposed time frame due to existing constraints on the network in the area.

“AWS was disappointed that it did not prove possible to proceed with this project. If conditions allow, we do hope to be able to make other high-tech investments elsewhere in Ireland,” Amazon told The Irish Times.

ESB Networks confirmed discussions were ongoing with Amazon over connection for the facility, which it said was a “server recycling plant, not a data centre”.

“ESB Networks was still actively working on this with the developer up until the decision was taken not to proceed in Dublin.”

Amazon has made significant investment in Ireland totalling €22bn, and employs around 6,500 people across a number of locations in Dublin, Drogheda and Cork.
